Of course cats grieve, but a new study from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., may help you identify the signs more quickly. The researchers surveyed 412 cat owners about cat behavior when a cat lost a companion animal in the family (dog or cat). The cats in the study showed many of the same behavior changes dogs do during these times, including a decrease in sleeping, eating, and playing.
Along with these decreases, many cats spent more time seeking attention from their owners and other pets. This was interspersed with hiding and going off alone, apparently searching for the missing pet. Changes were greatest for cats who had what was felt to be a positive relationship with the deceased animal. Household dynamics may also change with the loss of a pet. If the cat and the animal who passed had been companions for a long time, the signs of grief were greater.
If your cat loses a companion animal or human family member, be prepared to provide support and extra attention as needed, and be aware of things like eating patterns. If you notice any changes in your cat’s health, or worrisome changes in appetite upon the loss of a beloved companion in your home, be sure to contact your veterinarian.ν
