Diabetes is an endocrine disease characterized by high blood sugar (glucose). In cats, the biggest risk factor for developing diabetes is obesity. Middle-aged, overweight, sedentary, indoor cats fed diets too high in carbohydrates are the most likely candidates for developing diabetes. Cats being treated with steroids for other disorders and cats with chronic pancreatitis are also at risk.
