FDA OKs Emergency Screwworm Treatment

Concern about screwworm flies spreading north mounts

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Credelio CAT (lotilaner chewable tablets). This is the first drug authorized by the FDA for the treatment of the new world screwworm (NWS) in cats. The screwworm fly is a parasite that lays eggs in the flesh of warm-blooded animals such as cattle, dogs, cats, and humans. It was eradicated from the United States in 1966, except for one small outbreak in 2017 in Florida that was quickly stopped. The parasite is now being seen in South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
