Cats’ eyes are really cool, especially their pupils. They change size dramatically in different levels of light and often are a reflection of a cat’s general state of mind. The pupils become tiny, vertical slits in bright light and more rounded black circles in low light. They are medium-sized vertical ovals in relaxed, happy cats and great big round saucers in angry or stressed cats (due to the adrenaline rush). One thing you will notice, though, is that a normal cat’s pupils are equal-sized regardless of how they change with lighting conditions and demeanor. Unequal pupil size—called “anisocoria”—is never normal in cats.
