MDR1 Mutation Identified in Cats

This gene defect is commonly found in herding dogs

The MDR1 genetic mutation of the ABCB1 gene is well documented in Collies and Australian Shepherd dogs. Few know, however, that this defect was found in 4% of cats tested in 2015. Dogs and cats with this genetic mutation are sensitive to a number of drugs, including eprinomectin, ivermectin, and selamectin. Neurologic side effects like weakness, ataxia (wobbly gait), and seizures may be seen in affected pets when these drugs are administered. Importantly, the list of drugs to which affected cats can have adverse reactions is growing.
