Their mysterious origins are becoming clearer

Domestic cats are believed to have arisen from the African wildcat, but actual domestication is attributed to the Neolithic Levant 9,500 years ago and from Egypt 3,500 years ago. They are believed to have spread into Europe via Anatolia with Neolithic farmers 6,400 years ago and from Egypt about 2,000 years ago. But research is continuing to look for more solid evidence.
