Antimicrobial resistance is a true concern. Resistance means that many bacteria are no longer susceptible to many of the commonly used antibiotics. Using antibiotics when not needed and not following dosage directions correctly have contributed to resistant bacteria.
The European Network Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Therapy (ENOVAT) writes guidelines for antibiotic use in clinical situations. Their latest set of guidelines addresses the use of antibiotics before and during surgeries.
