Initial work with healthy cats shows promise

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Association looked at a novel way to reduce blood potassium levels in cats.

Hyperkalemia, or elevated levels of potassium, can be fatal in cats because of the effects of high levels of potassium in the blood on cardiac function. This electrolyte imbalance is most commonly a result of urinary tract and/or renal disease.

Researchers gave 20 cats an inhaled dose of albuterol via a mask over their muzzles. Ideally, the mask was in place for 10 breaths. Potassium levels in the cats dropped within three minutes, with peak effects seen by 30 minutes and the overall effect lasting for three hours.

This experiment was done on healthy cats, so more work needs to be done, specifically on sick cats, including cats with heart problems.

We look forward to these follow-up studies given the potential for these findings to save the lives of cats with hyperkalemia.
