The Pet Poison Helpline’s list of 2024’s top 10 poisons for cats is based on calls to their helpline. As you can see from the sidebar, plants continue to be a big problem, with half the list reflecting plant intoxications. Cats, especially indoor cats, are intrigued by both houseplants and floral arrangements.
Note that any part of Lilium lilies, including pollen that may fall from the blooms and the water from a vase that holds an arrangement, are particularly toxic. Kidney failure, often fatal, can be the result of these encounters.
Despite not having taste buds for sweets, cats can be attracted to chocolate just as dogs are, and chocolate took the No. 2 spot in top cat poisons for 2024.
Medications also show up frequently on this list. Cats have been known to consume human and pet medications when a dropped pill is found, so careful handling of all medications is important. These should always be stored safely away from prying paws.
