Antimicrobial resistance (AR) is a situation in which bacterial, viral, and fungal species evolve to lose their susceptibility to drugs used to treat them. This can occur when these drugs are overused and/or not used properly.  The World Health Organization says this problem is one of the greatest health challenges the world faces today.
