The Cornell Chronicle recently reported on a collaborative study published by a group that included faculty at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine and four other veterinary colleges that investigated genetic similarities between feline and human cancer.
A total of 493 samples of 13 different tumor types were collected from cats along with paired control samples of non-cancerous tissues from control cats without cancer. Among the significant similarities found in this study, a mutation in a gene called TP53 appeared in 33% of feline tumors and 34% of human tumors.
