Kittens are defined as cats under 1 year of age. That year covers a lot of growing up and socializing. The ideal period for socializing kittens is considered to be 2 to 9 weeks of age, although some people would push that out to 12 weeks. Kittens who have not had positive human/kitten interactions by 4 months of age can be very difficult to socialize and may always be stressed by interactions with people.
The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA) has a short position statement that includes an extensive set of references about trying to work with feral kittens. If at all possible, it is recommended that kittens over 4 months of age be returned to the trap/neuter/release (TNR) colony they came from. This is done after vaccinating and spaying or neutering. Another possibility for these kittens, or very young cats, is to find them work as semi social barn cats.
If a cat is under 4 months of age, especially if they are from a queen who is social, they may respond to socialization protocols to make them good companions.
Most families want to add a kitten to their home as a companion. The likelihood of these older, unsocialized kittens becoming comfortable companions is very low and may require extensive time and effort for success.
