Extra-Label Law

In 1994, Congress passed a law making it legal for veterinarians to prescribe extra-label medications. As such, many of the extra-label medications commonly used in veterinary medicine have been in clinical use for decades. These years of clinical experience speak to the safety and efficacy of the medications. And, while the FDA requirements for approval may not have been met, veterinary studies regarding the use of most of these extra-label drugs abound.
